How G-Force Telemetry Works
VelocityCam records G-force telemetry with every session, using it to power session highlights and Pro advanced statistics rather than a live HUD gauge. This guide explains what the reading represents, how centering works, and where phone sensors reach their limits.
What G-force telemetry represents
Recorded G-force reflects acceleration in the horizontal plane — the forward, braking, and side-to-side forces the vehicle experiences during a session. Raw sensor data is noisy, especially on rough surfaces, so VelocityCam filters and stabilizes it before storing it with the session.
Automatic centering at recording start
When you press Record, VelocityCam automatically centers the recorded G-force reference for the current mounted setup. This removes the phone's resting tilt and orientation from the readings so what gets recorded reflects the vehicle's actual motion rather than how the phone happens to sit in its mount.
Optional manual centering
Automatic centering at record start covers most situations, but an optional manual Center control is available if the reference drifts — for example after adjusting the mount mid-session. It re-centers the G-force reference without interrupting the recording. Use it sparingly; a stable, secure mount is the better long-term fix.
Feeding session highlights and Pro advanced statistics
The recorded G-force stream is what session highlights are built from, surfacing the moments of hardest acceleration, braking, and cornering automatically. VelocityCam Pro goes further with advanced statistics for the session, including peak acceleration, peak braking, and peak horizontal and lateral G-force.
Accuracy limits of phone sensors
Phone motion sensors are consumer-grade, not certified measurement instruments. A rigid mount matters: vibration and a loose or flexing mount both add noise that filtering can only partly remove. Treat the readings as a faithful record of the shape of a ride, not as a laboratory-accurate measurement suitable for legal, competitive, or safety-critical decisions.
