How to Record Boat Telemetry Video
Recording on the water is mostly about setup. Position or mount the phone securely and wait for GPS readiness before recording. The environment adds constraints worth planning for.
1. Protect the phone
VelocityCam does not make the phone waterproof. Use a marine-rated mount and, where appropriate, a waterproof case. Keep the phone out of direct spray, submersion, and prolonged sun.
2. Avoid blocking GPS reception
Open water generally provides good satellite reception. Metal compartments and heavily shielded positions can weaken GPS reception, so position the phone where the signal is not blocked, and make sure it is secure before moving.
3. Wait for GPS lock, then record
GPS readiness is required before recording begins. Once recording, the HUD displays GPS-estimated speed; the Pro Performance HUD adds performance readouts. GPS estimates are not certified timing or navigation data.
4. Route Trace playback
With VelocityCam Pro, Route Trace overlays the run's GPS path during Library playback and in exported video. Mini Inset keeps it compact; Full-Screen Ghost Route takes over the frame, and Top Speed, Best 10s, and Best 30s are highlighted along the route. Route Trace works entirely offline — no map tiles are downloaded and no map API key is required, and it is not drawn on the live recording screen.
5. Export and share
Export the session in the format you want to share. GPX and KML route exports (Pro) let you review the run in other tools.

Do I need cellular data on the water?
No. Recording, playback, Route Trace, and export are offline.
Can I keep the phone in an under-console position?
You can. Camera framing is independent of GPS — the camera can point wherever you want to record, but the phone needs adequate satellite reception. Metal compartments and deeply recessed positions can weaken it. Test the position before a real run.
