Speed Overlay Video App for Android

VelocityCam records the video and the speed data at the same moment, so the number shown on screen belongs to that frame. When you export, the overlay is rendered into the new file — no separate editing pass, no guessing at timing. VelocityCam is not currently a general-purpose editor for importing arbitrary external videos; the telemetry has to be captured by VelocityCam while the video is recorded.

How the speed overlay is produced

Speed comes from the phone's GPS receiver and is sampled alongside the video timeline. Nothing is estimated after the fact, and the original recording file is never rewritten.

  • GPS-derived speed in MPH or KM/H
  • Speed samples aligned to the video timeline as it records
  • Live overlay on screen while recording
  • Same overlay reproduced during Library playback
  • Overlay composited into exported files
  • Original recording preserved untouched

When a speed overlay is the point

Scenic drives, acceleration clips, boat runs, trail rides, and track days all read better with a speed readout that viewers can trust. Because the value is captured live, the clip is self-documenting rather than annotated later.

Recording a speed overlay clip

  1. 1

    Wait for GPS lock

VelocityCam blocks recording until GPS is locked so the very first frame already carries real speed.

  2. 2

Record with the HUD you want

Pick a HUD profile before you start. The profile you choose is what appears on screen and, later, in the export.

  3. 3

Export with the overlay baked in

Choose Original, 9:16 Vertical, 1:1 Square, or 16:9 Landscape. The overlay is rendered into the new file and the source recording stays as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a speed overlay to a video I already recorded elsewhere?

No. VelocityCam records telemetry together with the video, so it cannot add accurate speed to footage captured by another camera or app.

Does the overlay change my original file?

No. Exporting creates a new file; the original recording is left untouched.

Is the speed accurate enough to prove anything?

It is consumer GPS from a phone. It is good enough for reviewing and sharing a session, but it is not a certified measurement and should not be treated as legal proof.

Can I get a speed overlay without mounting my phone?

Yes. The Handheld HUD shows GPS-based speed and other performance metrics without requiring a fixed mount, which suits passengers or anyone recording on foot.
